Our Campaigns

Tax Wealth, Not Poverty
Goal:
Secure a shift in national tax policy — so those with the most wealth finally pay their fair share, and those who work aren’t punished by the system.
Actions:
We’re building a coalition of MPs, economists, and campaigners to demand that the next Budget includes new taxes on wealth — from capital gains and inherited assets to offshore profits and stock buybacks. Our campaign is pushing for 100+ MPs to publicly back wealth taxes via pledges, EDMs, letters to ministers, and media statements. We're turning up the pressure in Parliament and on the streets.
What You Can Do:
· Sign the public petition
· Write to your MP, we can give you letter formats and briefing documents, just email TAP
· Share the “Tax Wealth, Not Work” campaign on social media

Prioritise Poverty
Goal:
Make poverty impossible for policymakers to ignore — by placing it at the top of every political agenda in the UK.
Action:
Millions are going hungry, living without heat, or facing eviction — yet poverty barely registers in most party manifestos. Our Prioritise Poverty campaign is working to change that. We're developing a “Nicolson Test” to assess whether new laws reduce or worsen poverty. We’re organising briefings, media outreach, and grassroots mobilisation to hold politicians accountable and demand urgent action.
What You Can Do:
✅ Invite your MP to take the “Poverty Pledge”
✅ Sign up to receive the Nicolson Test when it launches
✅ Share your own story to help humanise the issue

Cancel Council Tax for renters
Goal:
The abolition of council tax for renters, a move that would relieve financial pressure on over 10 million UK households and inject fairness into one of the country’s most regressive taxes. TAP argues that this is both unjust and unsustainable and is one way to ease the pain for those below the Poverty Line. The poorest 10% of households pay around 7% of their gross income in council tax—compared to just 1.5% for the richest 10%. The campaign outlines how the £17 billion shortfall in council tax revenue from removing renters could be offset by:
Action:
Campaign to shift the property tax burden to landowners and homeowners, who benefit most from rising property values (the cost of an average home goes up more than the cost of the average council tax). TAP is calling on MPs, councillors, civil society groups, and members of the public to support this transformative reform. The campaign aims to reshape the national conversation on how we fund local government—with fairness, compassion, and economic justice at its heart.
Outcome:
The TAP proposal would save the average renting household £1,620 a year, a life-changing boost in disposable income—especially during a cost-of-living crisis. With an average household income of £35,000, this reform would be the equivalent of a 6% tax-free pay rise for renters and much more than that for lower income families.
TAP supports the Fairer Share campaign which seeks to replace Council Tax and Stamp Duty with a Proportional Property Tax levied on property owners based on the value of their property. TAPs proposal is a measure that could be bring quick relief to those renters who are struggling with the cost of living.

The Real Agenda
The Real Agenda is TAP’s policy platform, it is a clear, focused call to action against poverty and inequality in the UK. The aim is to refocus the public debate on what really matters: decent incomes, affordable housing, accessible healthcare, and fair taxes.
At Taxpayers Against Poverty, we believe that poverty is a political choice — and it’s time to choose differently. Every one of our campaigns fights for a fairer tax system, stronger safety nets, and a more compassionate society.
We don’t just speak truth to power — we organise, influence, and mobilise. Below you’ll find the three initial key campaigns we’re driving right now. Each is bold. Each is urgent. Each needs you.
We don’t take big corporate money. We rely on people like you. Together, we can change the rules — and build a country that works for everyone.
